Meteor T.7 WA680 at Woldgate, north of Carnaby.

On Monday, 17th July 1950 this No.203 Advanced Flying School aircraft was flown by a student pilot on an exercise that involved flying a series of single engine circuits and landings at Carnaby airfield. While flying one wide circuit to the north of the airfield and with the starboard engine shut down, the port engine then failed. A violent thunderstorm passed over the area at the time and this aircraft became caught in it. The height at which the circuit was being made was too low as it passed over rising ground and while the pilot attempted to apply power to the starboard engine to regain control there was not enough height available to undertake this. He decided to reduce power to the good engine and make a forced landing with the wheels up in a wheat field in the Woldgate area, between Carnaby and Rudston. The aircraft had a Cat.4R damage assessment made against it that probably saw it sent for a repair in works.

Pilot - P.4 Alexander Begg RAF (3031012).
