Meteor T.7 VW459 damaged in the air, landed at Carnaby airfield.

On 1st August 1950 this No.203 Advanced Flying School aircraft this aircraft was to have been flown on a training exercise but after taking off the pilots noticed a rubber mat was caught in the airbrakes and was flapped around. At 400 feet the mat detached itself and the crew undertook the training flight followed by a normal landing. An inspection was later carried out and the aircraft had been slightly damaged by the mat flapping onto it. The mat had been placed on the wing to enable the crew to climb into the cockpit and for groundcrew to close the canopy without damaging the wing surface with their shoes. The groundcrew member had forgot to remove the mat after he had climbed down and he was later presented with some disciplinary action. Between 27th July 1950 and 12th September 1950 the runway at Driffield airfield was being resurfaced so all flying undertaken by the unit was carried out at Carnaby so one assumes this was where this incident occurred. The aircraft had a Cat.3R damage assessment made against it. It was repaired by 60 M.U. at Driffield so it appears to have been taken back to Driffield for this, rather than repairing it at Carnaby. It was servicable in September 1950.
