Spitfire LF.16 TE247 near Hesley Hall, New Rossington.

On 1st May 1950 this Flying Refresher School aircraft took off from Finningley airfield with the pilot detailed to carry out a training exercise that involved undertaking aerobatics and making steep turns with the flight lasting no longer than an hour. After taking off he climed through cloud to around 9,000 feet and did as instructed. After around forty minutes he attempted to contact his base on the radio but this initially did not work. He made a controlled descent through cloud and while flying at around 500 feet below the cloud he found that he had only eight gallons of fuel left. Air Traffic Control told hism to land anywhere on the airfield at Finningley but on his approach the fuel ran out. He then crashed landed, stated as being in the region of three miles south west of the airfield. The distance and direction would place the incident as being in the Hesley Hall area, south of New Rossington. It was stated that it total the aircraft had been in the air for ninety minutes not the hour as the pilot was told.
