Martinet TT.1 JN671 near Mappleton.

During the morning of 14th November 1950 this Central Gunnery School aircraft was flown on a drogue towing flight off the Yorkshire coast to allow pilots of other aircraft to be given gunnery training on the Skipsea range. Toward the end of the exercise and while flying at 15,000ft the engine failed and the propeller began to windmill. The pilot descended and headed toward land, he made belly landing in a stubble field near Mappleton just before 11.00hrs. Both the pilot and drogue operator escaped injury.
