Meteor T.7 VW448 near Kirkburn.

During the morning of Tuesday, 15th November 1949 this No.203 Advanced Flying School aircraft was one of at least two flown on training exercises that involved the pilots shutting down one engine and practicing flying on one engine. Prior to taking off the pilots were briefed that the visibility may be reduced and that the exercise may be cut short because of the possibility of fog. Two Meteors initially took off and begun their exercises. Fog later began to affect visibility so this aircraft attempted to return to Driffield and land. Unfortunately it missed the airfield but struck a twenty foot high pole that formed part of the airfield lighting system. It then burst into flames in the air before initially then hitting the road between Kirkburn and Southburn, crossed over a turnip field before coming to rest in a ploughed field near Neswick Low Farm.

Pilot - P.2 Peter Curtis Rees RAF (1654289), aged 25. Buried Barry Cemetery, Glamorgan.

I thank the pilot's family for contacting me in the early days of this website
