Spitfire F.XVI RW396 near Skipsea.
On 6th January 1949 this Central Gunnery School aircraft was being flown on a gunnery training exercise over the Skipsea gunnery range when debris was thrown up after the pilot made a pass on the target at low level. The radiator was damaged and subsequently the coolant leaked causing the engine to seize. The pilot was able to get the aircraft back over land and made a forced landing in field just west of the range near Far Grange Farm. The damage sustained saw the aircraft written off. The pilot was a USAF exchange pilot.
