Mosquito NF.36 RL247 near Theakston (?).

On 15th March 1949 this No.228 Operational Conversion Unit aircraft suffered both engines failing while on the approach to land at Leeming airfield. Unable to maintain height the pilot was forced to belly land around a mile south-west of the airfield. The fuel in the selected tank had been allowed to run dry. If the location and distance is correct then it would have made the forced landing in the Theakston / Exelby area. Cat.E/FA damage was the damage assessment and it was struck off charge on 5th April 1949. The unit record book stated that during March 1949 there occurred four reportable flying accidents and that the most serious was one that took place off the airfield, ie presumably this one and named the pilot below as sustaining minor injuries.

Pilot - W/Co George Ffolliott Powell-Shedden DSO DFC RAF (33277). Minor injuries.

Navigator - Name unknown.
