Tiger Moth T.2 DE953 at Church Fenton airfield.

On Thursday, 9th June 1949 this Leeds University Air Squadron aircraft was being flown on a dual instruction training flight in the Church Fenton area where the unit was based. While flying over the airfield the aircraft went into a spin at low height, the pilot lost control and it crashed onto the airfield. The two men on board were injured. The pilot broke both his legs while the passenger sustained a broken ankle. Both men were taken to York Military Hospital for treatment.

Pilot - F/Lt James Stewart Goodwin RAF (148560). Injured.

Passenger (Pupil) - Officer-Cadet John Greenwood Crossley RAF (2607762). Injured.


John Crossley would later be killed trying to fly 501 Squadron Vampire WR260 under the Clifton Suspension Bridge, in the Avon Gorge near Bristol on 3rd February 1957. He is buried at Filton New Cemetery, Bristol.
