Auster J/1 Autocrat G-AHCJ at Speeton.

On Sunday, 5th September 1948 the East Riding Flying Club held their annual air display in conjunction with Butlin's Air Rally at an airfield at Speeton named Bridlington (Speeton) airfield. The airfield site was east of the village, close to the cliff top and pretty much where a Junkers Ju88 crashed in 1942. The flying club organised a five lap / forty mile race around a circuit as part of the event and seven small aircraft were due to take part. Just after the start of the race and as they rounded a hanger which was the first turning point of the race, two aircraft collided at around fifty feet above the ground, they then locked together and crashed near the hanger. The wing of one broke off in the air. Although fuel was released and soaked the pilots it did not catch fire. G-AHCJ came to rest upside down and had to be turned over by firemen, ambulance crews and bystanders. Both pilots were taken to the Lloyd Hospital in Bridlington. The National Archives Board of Trade file "BT217/2305" should hold more information but I have yet to view the file.

On paper Mr Scott's ownership of G-AHCJ begun on 22nd September 1948 after this crash, whether this is a correct date of transfer or perhaps the previous owner, Arnold Sydney King, sold Mr Scott the damaged aircraft after he crashed it.
