Wellington T.18 PG238 near Driffield airfield.

On 8th May 1947 this No.228 Operational Conversion Unit aircraft undertook a training exercise when one of the engines suffered an oil leak and had to be shut down. The pilot could not maintain height on just one engine or reach base of Leeming so he attempted to land at Driffield airfield. Unfortunately it overshot the runway and ran into a neighbouring field where upon the undercarriage appears to have collapsed and a fire broke out. A fatal aircraft crash at Driffield the previous night appears to have taken newspaper column space when perhaps normally this incident may have received some small coverage.
