Avro York C.1 MW284 near Dishforth airfield.

During the morning of Monday, 17th November 1947 the pilot of this No.1332 Heavy Transport Command Unit was attempting a landing at Dishforth airfield, possibly landing with one of the four engines shut down, when it landed heavily. The aircraft bounced and the pilot attempted to take off again but it stalled and fell to the ground, coming to rest in a field just west of the airfield, at the west side of the Great North Road and burst into flames. Its four crew scrambled out with minor injuries before the fire spread and destroyed the aircraft. Where this aircraft came to rest has probably now been lost to the A1(M) motorway upgrade that took place in recent years and that was built to the west of the former old Great North Road.
