Mosquito TB.VI TA530 near Greta Bridge.
During the late morning of 29th October 1946 this No.13 Operational Training Unit aircraft was flown on a training flight that involvd the pilot shutting down one engine to practice flying on just one good engine. Unfortunately during the flight the good engine appears to have failed and he was unable to unfeather the one deliberately shut down. At 12.00hrs he attempted to make a forced landing in a field around five miles south-east of Barnard Castle, but crashed doing so. The location given on the AM Form 1180 stated the crash landing was made five miles and 120' from Barnard Castle; this would put it to be in the area between Greta Bridge and Hutton Magna. Locating a newspaper report may help pin down the location. Cat.E/FA damage was the damage assessment and the aircraft was struck off charge two days later. It was thought that the pilot had mishandled the main fuel cocks so that fuel was not supplied to the engines.
