Warwick HG145 at Thornaby airfield.

On 8th July 1945 this 280 squadron aircraft over-ran the runway on landing at Thornaby and the pilot raised the undercarriage to stop it going down into the ravine beyond the overshoot area. Nine airmen in the aircraft survived.

Warwick HG145 was ordered as a MkII type and was built to contract ACFT/494 as a MkI by Vickers Armstrongs Ltd at Weybridge. It was delivered to the RAF in mid-1944 and issued to 280 Squadron at Langham on an unknown date in 1945, it moved with the unit to Thornaby in January 1946. It sustained Cat.E2/FA damage as a result of the incident at Thornaby as detailed above.
