Liberator GR.VI EV879 at Dishforth airfield.

At 18.10hrs on 21st March 1946 this 1332 (Transport) Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was in the process of taking off from Dishforth airfield when the pilot believed that there was a problem with the brakes binding, possibly because he thought the aircraft was not travelling fast enough. He abandoned the take off and attempted to stop the aircraft but owing to the speed it was travelling there was not enough runway space left. The aircraft over-ran the airfield, went through the boundary and the undercarriage collapsed. It came to rest in a field just off the airfield site.

Pilot - Name unknown.

The aircraft had previously been registered in the USA as 42-64286 before transfer to the RAF.
