Firebrand TF.IV EK739 near Brough.
This aircraft used by Blackburn Aircraft Ltd at Brough as a research and development aircraft. A general problem with aileron oscillation during dives was being investigated by Blackburns and during a test flight on 7th March 1946 the problem was magnified during a dive carried out at speed. During a dive fractures occurred in the wings and fuselage, and a cockpit side window broke. The test pilot managed to slow the aircraft before baling out in the Brough area. Where the aircraft went on to crash is unknown.
Pilot - Mr Peter Godfrey Lawrence MBE.
Peter Lawrence served in the Royal Navy as a Fleet Air Arm pilot during WW2 before transferring to become a test pilot for Blackburns. He was awarded in MBE in the New Year Honours List 1946. He would be killed on 11th June 1953 flying the second Javelin prototype WD808 in a crash near Bristol.
