Lancaster RF204 damaged in the air, landed at Carnaby airfield.

At 01.28hrs on 22nd March 1945 this 189 Squadron aircraft took off from Fulbeck airfield to undertake an operational flight to bomb Hamburg. At 04.10hrs while flying at 15,400ft the aircraft released their bomb load over the target area. Five seconds after releasing their bomb load over the target this aircraft was struck by a falling bomb from a higher flying aircraft. The port side of the rear fuselage and turret of Lancaster RF204 was hit and the rear gunner was slightly injured on his right shoulder. Once on their way home the pilot was unsure that the aircraft still had it's tail wheel attached so the crew diverted to Carnaby where they landed at 06.56hrs.
