Halifax NR281 at Riccall airfield.

On 20th February 1945 this 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft landed at Riccall airfield at 19.56hrs following a night circuit training flight but overshot the runway and ran into boggy ground. The wheels sank into the ground and the aircraft nose smacked into the ground badly damaging it.

Instructor Pilot - F/O Hugh Drummond Melville DFC RAFVR (179582).

Trainee Pilot - F/Sgt Leo Edward Joseph Corrigan RAAF (424736).


Leo Corrigan was posted to 578 Squadron on 2nd March 1945 and then to 466 Squadron on 15th March 1945. He managed to get four operational flights in before V.E. Day.
Hugh Melville was involved in the crash of Halifax LW480 at Hemingbrough on 5th April 1945. he had earlier been awarded the DFC for service with 578 Squadron.
