Halifax NP818 at Linton on Ouse airfield.

During the morning of 25th March 1945 this 426 Squadron aircraft was to be flown on an operational flight to bomb Munster. During the first attempt to take off from Linton on Ouse the aircraft began to swing off the runway but the pilot managed to regain control stop the aircraft. At 07.30hrs as the aircraft began to attempt to take off for the second time it again began to swing but this time it left the runway, the pilot lost control and it clipped another aircraft. It then ran through a ditch, causing the undercarriage to collapse. A fire broke out and the crew ran clear but a short time later the bomb load exploded, destroying this aircraft and also damaging Halifax NP684 that was left parked on a dispersal nearby. The identity of the aircraft that was initially clipped is not yet known.
