Lancaster ND707 damaged in the air, landed at Carnaby airfield.

During the evening of 1st February 1945 the crew of this 166 Squadron undertook an operational flight to bomb Monchengladbach and they took off from Kirmington at 15.35hrs. While over the target area this aircraft was struck by falling incendiary bombs that were released by a higher flying aircraft that was flying higher than briefed. Minor damage resulted but fortunately no fire started. This crew released their bomb load from 15,500 feet at 19.22hrs onto red/green target marking flares. The aircraft was diverted to land at Carnaby on their return to England where they landed at 23.59hrs.

This whole crew were killed just days later on 21st February 1945 when 166 Squadron Lancaster NG183 failed to return from Ops to Dortmund. They are buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery
