Halifax NA278 damaged in the air, landed at Breighton airfield.
On 31st March 1945 this 78 Squadron aircraft was flown on an air-to-sea firing training exercise, probably on the ranges off Filey / Bridlington. At around 15.15hrs while over the range one of the machine guns within the rear turret suffered from a jammed bullet. The rear gunner attempted to clear the stoppage and in turning the turret the bullet freed itself. Unfortunately the freed bullet then went off, the head was an explosive tip and on striking the tail plane minor damage resulted. The damage appears to have not prevented the crew making a safe return to Breighton, they could have landed at nearby Carnaby but Carnaby's station records do not mention the Halifax landing.
Pilot - F/O Victor Crawford North RCAF (J/35866).
