Halifax MZ914 damaged in the air, landed at Driffield airfield.

On the night of 5th / 6th March 1945 this 466 Squadron aircraft was to have flown an operational sortie to bomb Chemnitz and took off from Driffield at 16.54hrs. Fifty minutes into the flight at 17.45hrs and while flying at 9,000 feet the aircraft iced up, the pilot lost control and the aircraft turned over on to it's back and fell from the sky. These unforecast weather conditions were a major problem on this date and caused a number of fatal flying accidents. Having lost 6,000 feet in height this aircraft's ice cleared and the pilot was able to regain control at 2,000 feet but in doing so the aircraft was overstressed. The crew abandoned the operational sortie somewhere over South Lincolnshire and landed at 19.05hrs which was probably back at Driffield. The aircraft received a Cat.B damage assessment a few days later but before the repairs were finished the aircraft was re-assessed with more serious damage found. Re-Cat.E damage was the subsequent assessment and it was struck off charge.
