Halifax MZ823 suggested as crashing at Leeming airfield.
On 1st April 1945 this aircraft is listed in slightly less modern books than the creation date of this webpage as being damaged in a crash. It is listed as being with 427 Squadron at the time and as 427 Squadron were based at Leeming at the time the assumption appears to have been made that it was damaged there. I have not yet found any evidence that this was the case. 427 Squadron last flew Halifaxes operationally in early March 1945 and MZ823 was infact last used operationally on 27th February 1945. I would therefore suggest that 427 Squadron got rid of the Halifax aircraft well before 1st April 1945.
Unfortunately MZ823's AM Form 78 has an incorrect entry that states on 13th / 14th February 1945 Cat.E (missing)/FB damage occurred. I believe that this should relate to Halifax MZ803 as this was lost on that date. The AM Form 78 for MZ823 does then state that on 10th April 1945 it was passed to Handley Page following "M.I. R.I.W." (major inspection, repair in works) and was then Re-Cat.E on 23rd May 1945 with it being struck off charge on 21st June 1945. This to me suggests that it failed a major inspection just prior to 10th April 1945. No mention of a crash on 1st April 1945.
