Halifax MZ587 at Dishforth airfield.

On 13th January 1945 the crew of this 1664 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft were undertaking a basic night circuit flying exercise. Prior to the incident the aircraft had taken off at 20.22hrs but how many previous circuits the crew had flown that night are not yet known. At 20.30hrs the aircraft made an approach to land at Dishforth but the landing was far too heavy and the port undercarriage leg collapsed. As it skidded to a halt a fire broke out in the region of the port outer engine. The crew escaped injury.
