Halifax LW368 at Topcliffe or Dishforth airfield.

On 1st February 1945 this 1659 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft took off from Topcliffe airfield so the crew could undertake a daytime cross country training exercise. During the flight the port inner engine failed and the propeller was feathered. This aircraft was one of ten from the training unit carrying out similar exercises and all returning aircraft were diverted away from Topcliffe to land at nearby Dishforth. At 15.00hrs the pilot was attempting to land at Dishforth but lost control on a three engined landing and swung off the runway and came to rest in a ditch with the port undercarriage leg broken. The pilot was later posted to 426 Squadron. The AM Form 1180 states the incident occurred at Topcliffe but the unit orb is very detailed and specific and stated it occurred at Dishforth.

Pilot - P/O F W Berg RCAF (J/91148).
