Halifax LV949 at Carnaby airfield.
On 9th March 1945 this 466 Squadron aircraft was to be flown on a cross country flight. On take off from Driffield at around 11.00hrs the pilot retracted the undercarriage too early and this damaged it. The aircraft became airborne and remained flyable but the crew probably realised that there would be a problem with the undercarriage when landing came later. They flew to Carnaby airfield and at 13.11hrs on landing there the already damaged undercarriage collapsed.
A few days earlier the aircraft had iced up on Ops to Chemnitz resulting in control being briefly lost and some of the crew abandoned the aircraft. Unfortunately one of the died as a result of a heavy parachute landing. The pilot of the aircraft at the time regained control and landed at Carnaby with the aircraft apparently undamaged.
Pilot - F/Lt John Stanley Hutton RAAF (419501).
