Halifax LL574 at Dishforth airfield.

On the night of 2nd / 3rd March 1945 this 1664 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a training flight. After a 5.30hrs flight the crew landed at Dishforth just before 00.30hrs. While taxying back to a dispersal point and while being marshalled by ground crew the pilot was instructed to stop because another aircraft was blocking their path. The aircraft was not lit so the pilot could not see it ahead of him. Unfortunately the brakes were hot after landing and they did not stop the aircraft before a minor collision occurred. Sadly just over 24 hours later this pilot and all his trainee crew were killed when Halifax NA612 was shot down by an intruder aircraft and crashed near Brafferton.

Pilot - P/O Kenneth William Griffey RCAF (J/92644).
