Hurricane LF567 near Lindholme airfield.

On 30th April 1945 this 1667 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was to be used on a night time fighter affiliation exercise and took off from Sandtoft airfield at 22.00hrs. Prior to taking off the pilot had forgotten to switch the fuel supply back to the main fuel tanks from the reserve fuel tank. The reserve tank that was left selected following an earlier flight was nearly out of fuel. Half an hour after taking off the aircraft ran out of fuel causing the engine to cut out and not realising the error the pilot attempted to reach Lindholme airfield. The aircraft did not have the height remaining to make a landing on the airfield at Lindholme so he made a belly landing around 200 yards short of the runway at 22.30hrs. The aircraft was badly damaged but the pilot escaped injury. Plenty of fuel was found in the main fuel tanks but the reserve tank was dry.

Pilot - W/O William Albert Henry Chambers RAFVR (968280).
