Halifax HX268 damaged in the air, landed at Topcliffe airfield.

On 7th January 1945 this 1659 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a cross country training flight. When the crew were returning to Topcliffe the port inner engine failed and unfortunately the propeller would not feather. At 20.40hrs on the approach to land at Topcliffe and while about 600 feet above the ground the port inner propeller and reduction gear tore away from the engine and struck the fuselage injuring one of the crew. The pilot remained in control and landed safely. This crew appear to have been undertaking an H2S training course at 1659 H.C.U. and all were posted to 158 Squadron on 20th January 1945 suggesting any injuries were slight.

Pilot - F/Sgt J W Maynard RAFVR (1580270).
