Spitfire EP558 at Dalton airfield

On 3rd February 1945 this 1695 (Bomber) Defence Training Flight Spitfire was in the process of landing at Dalton airfield when it ran off the runway and flipped onto it's back. The aircraft was badly damaged but the pilot escaped injury.

Pilot - S/Ldr Maxwell Samuel Strange DSO DFC RCAF (J/24504).


Maxwell Strange was awarded the DSO for service with 427 Squadron, Gazetted on 1st August 1944. He was also awarded the DFC for service with 427 Squadron, Gazetted on 8th December 1944.
Spitfire EP558 was built in 1942 and had previously served with 312 Squadron, 65 Squadron, 132 Squadron, 302 Squadron and 313 Squadron before being taken on charge by 1695 Flight. As a result of the landing accident on 3rd February 1945 the damage was assessed as being Cat.E/FA and the aircraft was struck off charge six days later.
