Unidentified aircraft at Carnaby airfield.

In the early hours of 4th March 1945 as operational aircraft were returning to their bases in England following an attack on Kamen they were followed by a number of Luftwaffe intruder Junkers Ju88s. As the bombers neared their bases the Luftwaffe attacks began, a number of aircraft were shot down and further aircraft damaged but were able to make safe landings. After the attacks started many of the No.4 Group airfields in Yorkshire turned off their lighting and diverted their aircraft away to land with a number finding Carnaby open. A (currently) unidentified aircraft was diverted to land at Carnaby and made a good landing. While in the general area of Holme on Spalding Moor airfield 76 Squadron Halifax NA584 was attacked by one of the Luftwaffe aircraft and its bullets killed one of the crew. The crew of NA584 were diverted to land at Carnaby but as it landed at 01.10hrs it over-ran the landing area and struck this unidentified aircraft and also a steam roller. This unidentified aircraft was almost certainly repaired and was probably a Halifax though could have been a Lancaster, I have yet to trawl through all operational squadrons records to see which aircraft is listed as have landed at Carnaby and was damaged though in theory it could also have been a Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft that was forced to land there.

Crew - (probably) none.
