Lancaster W4821 at Carnaby airfield.
At around 15.25hrs on 10th August 1944 this No.1 Lancaster Finishing School aircraft sustained damage to the starboard undercarriage leg on take off, probably at it's base of Hemswell airfield, for the crew to undertake a training flight. It was later said to have been retracted too early. The crew tested the undercarriage leg in the air and it was found that it would not lock down properly. After nearly two hours flying the aircraft made a belly landing at Carnaby airfield. The undercarriage jack rams were found to be bent. the pilot and probably those with him on this flight were later posted to 460 Squadron. Victor Grimmett was awarded the DFC for service with 460 Squadron.
