Lancaster W4793 at Lindholme airfield.

At 18.00hrs on 21st February 1944 this No.1 Lancaster Finishing School aircraft struck a Standard 10 RAF Van (Reg.93644) while taxying at Lindholme airfield. The van drove in front of the Lancaster and struck it around the region of the starboard undercarriage. The WAAF driver of the van was deemed to blame. Minor Cat.A damage resulted to the aircraft.

Pilot - F/O James Guy Johnstone RAFVR (135076).

Six crew - Names unknown.


On 31st March 1944 James Johnstone and his crew were flying 103 Squadron Lancaster JB736 on Ops to Nuremberg when the aircraft was shot down over Germany killing all but one of the crew. They are buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery.
