Halifax W1276 at Marston Moor airfield.

On the night of 14th March 1944 this 1652 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was to have been flown on a night flying training exercise. While taking off from Marston Moor at 22.30hrs the aircraft began to swing to starboard off the runway, the pilot managed to correct the swing but it then began to swing to port. The pilot then reduced power to the engines and applied the brakes to try and stop the aircraft but as it was heading towards flying control he then raised the undercarriage to avoid a collision. The pilot was later posted to 640 Squadron and was killed on Ops two months after this mishap.

Pilot - Sgt Douglas Osborne Thomas RCAF (R/136039).
