Halifax W1231 at Wombleton airfield.
At 12.35hrs on 12th September 1944 this 1666 Heavy Conversion Flight Halifax was damaged following a heavy landing at Wombleton airfield. The landing caused severe damage to the rear fuselage and after inspection it was deemed beyond repair. No crew details are known as yet but they are believed to have escaped injury.

Halifax W1231 was built to contract B982938/39 by English Electric Co.Ltd. at Samlesbury and was delivered to Bombing Development Unit (BDU) at Gransden Lodge on 20th July 1942, part of No.3 Group. Later in 1942 it transferred to 35 Squadron at Graveley in No.8 Group Pathfinder Force. It then transferred to Navigation Training Unit (PFF)(NTU) at Gransden Lodge on 10th April 1943 and then to 1666 HCU at Dalton on 12th July 1943. It was one of the first aircraft to be taken on charge by 1666 HCU after its formation. Following the incident on 12th September 1944 it sustained Cat.E/FA and after which it was stripped and reduced to spares and produce.
