Halifax V9994 at Marston Moor airfield.
At 11.45hrs on 22nd February 1944 this 1652 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft swung off the runway at Marston Moor airfield while landing on a basic circuits and landing exercise. The pilot managed to correct this first swing but it then swung again and was drifting towards a lorry on the edge of the airfield. The pilot attempted to avoid a collision and in doing so the undercarriage collapsed.
Pilot - Sgt Colin Shackleton RAVVR (1398483).
Six Crew - Names unknown.
Colin Shacklton was soon posted to 51 Squadron and was killed on 18th April 1944 flying Halifax LW522 on Ops to Tergnier after a collision with a 158 Squadron aircraft.
He is buried at Grand-Seraucourt British Cemetery, France.
