Halifax R9437 at Lindholme airfield.

During the afternoon of 29th April 1944 this 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a circuits and landings training exercise. The aircraft appears to have made one solo circuit of the airfield and then successfully landed at Lindholme. At 17.25hrs the aircraft began to take off again but as it had just left the ground the starboard outer engine failed. The aircraft then lost what height it had and, with the wheels still down, skidded for some 300 yards until it crossed a dispersal area towards the northern side of the airfield. The undercarriage legs appear to have both collapsed and the aircraft was badly damaged.

Pilot - F/O William George Shearer USAAF (10601623).
