Halifax R9382 at Topcliffe airfield.

During the early afternoon on 3rd March 1944 this 1659 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was flown on a circuits and landings training exercise using Topcliffe airfield. On the approach to landi at 13.06hrs at Topcliffe a cross-wind was blowing. Just prior to touching down the wind dropped and this caused the aircraft's port wing to drop slightly. The aircraft landed on the port wheel first and the port wing tip struck the ground. The aircraft came to rest on the grass beside the runway and was found to have been badly damaged or over-stressed, after assessment it was deemed beyond economic repair. The undercarriage does not appear to have collapsed as all four engines were not damaged.

Pilot - F/O Stanley John Joplin RCAF (J/24979).
