Unidentified Halifax near Wombleton airfield.
Not much is known about this incident. Believed to have been at around 19.00hrs one February night during the War, the lights in many houses in Harome went out due to a power cut. It transpired that a bomber (presumably a Halifax belonging to 1666 Heavy Conversion Unit) had taken off from Wombleton and failed to gain height quickly enough. It was so low that the rear wheel caught on the electric supply wire near the council houses in Harome. The aircraft did not crash but kept going along with three pole-lengths of wire trailing behind and after making a circuit of the airfield it landed safely. The crew apparently had quite a shock because they hadn't realised anything had happened. I have yet to locate any additional information on this incident to gain a precise date and identify the aircraft involved.
Crew - Names unknown.
