On 22nd October 1944 the crew of this 571 Squadron aircraft were flying an operational flight to Hamburg and set out from Oakington airfield at 16.56hrs. On the return flight to the UK the aircraft's port engine failed resulting in the power to the radio equipment and navigation aids not working. The crew became lost and while flying in low cloud conditions the aircraft flew into rising ground at 21.23hrs in the region of Dovestone Moss in the Peak District. This accident occurred just inside the old West Riding of Yorkshire boundary. I would direct anyone with this or any of the flying accidents within the Peak District area to Alan Clark's superb website which details this loss. I no not intend to copy his research and this webpage is created for purely a completeness of the record.
