Lancaster PB343 damaged at Kirmington, landed at Carnaby airfield.
On the night of 30th / 31st October 1944 the crew of this 153 Squadron aircraft was flown on an operational flight to bomb Cologne and took off from Kirmington at 17.35hrs.
The crew released their bomb load onto the target from 18,000 feet at 21.10hrs onto a concentration of flares. They flew back to Lincolnshire but on the approach to land at
Kirmington the aircraft struck a tree on the approach to land which damaging the undercarriage and also put one of the engines unservicable. They remained in the air but were then
diverted to land at Carnaby where they landed at 00.20hrs without further incident.
