Spitfire P8336 near Catfoss airfield.
On 25th September 1944 this Central Gunnery School aircraft took off from Catfoss airfield to undertake a fighter affiliation exercise with a Wellington. forty eight minutes into the flight and while in the airfield circuit the fuel ran out and the engine cut out. The pilot made a forced anding near Catfoss Grange, around a mile east of Catfoss airfield but it was badly damaged. It was found that the pilot had not checked the fuel level prior to take off and that a member of groundcrew had claimed that the tanks were re-filled when they were not. The damaged aircraft was initially assessed as repairable but four days later it was deemed beyond repair and written off. The aircraft was a presentation aircraft and carrier the name "Flores".
