Halifax NR187 at Pocklington airfield.

During the evening of 21st November 1944 this 102 Squadron aircraft was to have been flown on an operational flight to bomb Sterkrade and took off from Pocklington at 17.45hrs. After about an hour into the flight the port inner engine began to run roughly so the crew abandoned the flight and turned around. The approach to land at Pocklington airfield was made too high and because the engine was not running smoothly the pilot decided to land rather than risk flying an overshoot because he feared the engine may cut out when he attempted to climb away. During the subsequent landing at 20.06hrs the aircraft overshot and ran into ditch alongside the York - Pocklington road which caused the undercarriage to collapse.
