Halifax NR128 at Snaith airfield.
During the evening of 27th October 1944 this 51 Squadron aircraft was flown on a night training exercise. During the exercise the starboard inner engine failed so was shut down and the propeller then correctly feathered. After 4.30hrs of flight the crew had flown back to making an approach to land at Snaith but the aircraft was slightly too high and was still flying too fast by the the time a landing was made at 23.01hrs. The aircraft could not be stopped on the airfield and came to rest in a field off the boundary with the undercarriage collapsed. One of the seven man crew sustained injuries.
Pilot - P/O Leonard Keith Toms RAAF (420608).
