Halifax NP974 at Snaith airfield.
During the evening of 2nd November 1944 this 51 Squadron aircraft was to have been flown on an operational flight to bomb Dusseldorf and the crew took off from Snaith at 16.07hrs.
Outbound the aircraft suffered an engine failure, the crew shut down the engine and feathered the propeller but abandoned the trip and jettisoned their bomb load. On the approach to land at Snaith the crew believed that they lowered the undercarriage but it was not properly locked down so collapsed on landing at Snaith at 21.00hrs. The crew split from the flight engineer soon after this incident after he was deemed at fault, sad five of the six crew who remained together were killed two months later on Ops.
