Halifax NP816 at Sherburn in Elmet airfield.

On 27th September 1944 this aircraft was in the care of Ferry Pilot Pool, ATA and had been parked at Sherburn in Elmet airfield for some five days. At 09.00hrs the undercarriage collapsed without warning. A hydraulic leak in the selector valve had caused the problem but as the lever had been left in the "neutral" position instead of the "down" position the leak eventually resulted in the legs collapsing.

No crew.

Halifax NP816's AM Form 78 states that the aircraft was received by 44 MU on 23rd September 1944 as a brand new aircraft. No.7 Ferry Pilot Pool of the ATA must have been responsible for moving the aircraft from the manufacturer. It must have collected from the manufacturers the day previous to when the AM.78 states as the AM Form 1180 states that the aircraft had been stood on the ground at Sherburn in Elmet for five days prior to the mishap occurring. Cat.B/FB damage resulted on 27th September 1944 and it was sent for repair by Handley Page though it took some months to become servicable again.
