Halifax NP712 damaged in the air, landed at Carnaby airfield.
On the night of 16th / 17th August 1944 this 408 Squadron aircraft was flown on an operational flight to bomb Kiel and took off from Linton on Ouse airfield at 21.37hrs. Just before reaching the target area the starboard outer engine cut out but the crew released their bomb load a minute later from 19,500 feet at 00.11hrs. They then attempted to feather the propeller but it would not feather and eventually the engine caught fire, the heat from the fire caused the Graviner fire extinguisher to explode which in turn put out the fire. 75 minutes later electrical equipment within the aircraft failed. The crew diverted to the emergency landing strip at Carnaby where a landing was made 03.05hrs.
