Lancaster ND967 damaged in the air, landed at Carnaby airfield.
On the night of 29th / 30th August 1944 the crew of this 460 Squadron aircraft flew an operational flight to bomb Stettin and took off from Binbrook at 21.29hrs. Around twenty five miles before the target
this aircraft was flying normally when it collided with another aircraft. The Lancaster's port inner engine was put out of action, the propeller on the starboard inner engine was bent but remained giving some
power. The H2S blister was damaged as well as the bomb doors. Despite the damage the crew continued to the target and released their bomb load from 12,000 at 02.08hrs. They flew back to England but diverted
to land at Carnaby, landing at 07.24hrs.
The damage to this aircraft must have been fairly severe as it initially received a Cat.E damage assessment that would normally have seen it written off but this was later downgraded to Re.Cat.B. It was taken for a
repair at a works factory and once servicable in April 1945 it went to 429 Squadron.
