Halifax NA678 at Elvington airfield.
During the evening of 4th November 1944 this 347 Squadron aircraft was flown on an operational flight to bomb Bochum and took off from Elvington at 17.31hrs. The crew released their bomb load onto the target indicators at 19.44hrs from 19,200 feet. At 22.31hrs the aircraft landed at Elvington but owing to a cross wind the aircraft began to swing off the runway, the pilot was unable to correct the swing before the strain on the port undercarriage leg cause it to collapse.
