Halifax NA623 near Middleton-on-the-Wolds.

On 29th November 1944 this 76 Squadron aircraft took off from Holme on Spalding Moor airfield at 02.44hrs with the crew tasked with flying an operational flight to bomb Essen. The crew released their bomb load onto the target area from 18,500 feet at 05.37hrs. On their return to Yorkshire the flight engineer made a mis-calculation of the fuel level remaining in the tanks and believed that the aircraft had only ten minutes flying time remaining so informed the pilot of this. As the pilot then believed that the aircraft would not have reached an airfield within ten minutes he made a belly landing at 08.45hrs on farmland near Wold Dyke Farm, Middleton-on-the-Wolds. The aircraft sustained damage that would later write it off but all on board escaped injury.
