Halifax NA599 damaged in the air, landed at Pocklington airfield.
During the evening of 31st October 1944 this 102 Squadron aircraft was used to fly an operational flight to bomb Cologne and took off from Pocklington airfield at 17.58hrs. The crew released their bomb load onto the target area at 21.07hrs from 18,900 feet but while over the target this aircraft was struck from above by falling incendiary bombs dropped from a higher flying aircraft and minor damage resulted. The nose was struck and an incendiary struck the bomb aimer on the head knocking him our. The mid upper turret was also damaged and the gunner injured. Despite the damage the crew flew back to Pocklington airfield and landed at 23.35hrs. Chris Goss's book "It's Suicide But It's Fun" shows two photographs of the damaged aircraft.
